Boys golf: Fremd's Allord soars into sectional

A spectacular round of golf from Pierce Allord highlighted play at Tuesday's Fremd regional tournament.

The Vikings senior fired a 74 - including a 1-under 35 on the back nine - to secure the third-place individual medal and a spot in next week's sectional meet at Bittersweet Golf Course in Gurnee.

Allord was boosted by a remarkable eagle on the 14th hole at Hilldale Golf Club in Hoffman Estates.

"I was hitting fairways and greens (today)," said Allord of his regional success. "I mean, my irons were spot on."

On the par-5 14th, Allord hit his drive in the left fairway, about 178 yards from the green.

Then came the shot of the day.

"I took a 7-iron with a little cut, and put it within about an inch (from the hole)," said Allord.

Highland Park won the meet with a 301 to advance to the sectional while Deerfield shot 314 to also move on.

Stevenson (315) won the third and final team advancement as Mark Noonan (76) and Conan Pan (79) made big contributions to the Patriots' qualification.

Jackson Bussell, Matthew Schawel, and Alexander Kim all carded 80's to count scores for the North Suburban Conference runners-up.

Barrington also excelled at Hilldale, seeing three golfers move on to sectionals.

Bobby Beaubien (81), Sean Markham (81) and Brandon Dorans (82) all qualified for the Broncos as individuals.

Nathan Schmidt from Fremd made the cut to play at Bittersweet by finishing with an 83, as did teammate Colin Robinson (78).

Seniors Caleb Choi of Palatine and Tommy Lumsden of Hersey each fired 77's to get out of regionals.

For Lumsden, it was a gratifying qualification as the senior rebounded from a severe shoulder injury earlier in his prep career to return to an elite level.

"It's not what you achieve in life, it's what you overcome in life," said Huskies coach Dan Caporusso of Lumsden's stellar achievement.

"For Tommy to overcome that kind of injury and shoot this kind of score at a state-like quality regional is exceptional."

Choi of the Pirates rallied from a double-bogey on his first hole to play just 4-over the rest of the way.

"After the fourth or fifth hole out here it started to get more windy," said Choi. "It definitely was a lot to adjust to, especially with this course - it's pretty tight."

"I just kept my composure and bounced back," added Choi, "and I didn't let (the slow start) get in my head."

Konnor Kininmonth of Lake Zurich shot 83 to earn one of the final sectional meet spots, as did TJ Constertina of Buffalo Grove, who carded an 82.

"This is very important to me, being my senior year," said Constertina. "I played well on the second nine. The first nine I was a little shaky, but I turned it around."

Now it's on to Bittersweet for this coming Monday's Warren-hosted sectional for the competitors, and Constertina says he'll be looking to shoot a "few practice rounds" at the Gurnee layout.

"I just want to keep playing the way I have been playing," said the senior, "and put up a decent score."

Hersey's Lumsden added that the trip to the sectional was something that was on his mind from day one of the season.

"This is huge," said the senior. "It's something I wanted to to do all year, and it went just like I hoped it would today.

"It means a lot to me."
