Southern Indiana district extends school day for eclipse

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana school district is extending its school day next Monday to give students a chance to view a partial solar eclipse.

New Albany Floyd County Schools will dismiss classes 15 minutes later than normal Monday to avoid sending students home during the eclipse's peak viewing time.

Interim superintendent Dr. Brad Snyder says the delay will enable students to watch the eclipse's peak together with their teachers.

WDRB-TV reports some students will view the eclipse under teacher supervision by wearing special glasses to protect their eyesight. Others will watch a NASA livestream of the spectacle.

Monday's eclipse will be a total solar eclipse for a small part of the U.S. and a partial eclipse elsewhere.

The moon will block about 95 percent of the sun's light in New Albany.
