Pair of newcomers set to join Mundelein High board

A pair of newcomers will join two re-elected incumbents on the next Mundelein High School District 120 Board of Education, according to unofficial results from Tuesday's election.

Returns show incumbents Laura Mellon, with 3,156 votes, and Sara Davalos, with 2,499, earned additional terms on the board. They'll be joined by Laura Lynn Vogt, who received 2,943 votes, and Thomas Ouimet, who received 2,597 votes.

Incumbent Tami Forman finished last with 2,455 votes, just 44 behind Davalos.

All four seats decided Tuesday carry 4-year terms. The results do not include mail and provisional ballots.

"I am overwhelmed and surprised," Mellon said Tuesday night. "It's nice to know that people still have faith in me."

The new board forms at a time of change at Mundelein High. Students and staff will operate under a traditional eight-period schedule starting this fall. The block schedule that had students taking only four classes each semester will be eliminated.

Mundelein High is the only public high school in Lake County using a block schedule. All of the candidates supported changing to a more traditional schedule.

Additionally, the school board is considering eliminating class rank starting with the next freshman class. Valedictorian and salutatorian honors, indicating the students with the best and second-best grade-point averages, also would be discontinued.
