Teen pedestrian killed in Vernon Hills

A 13-year-old boy from Mundelein was killed late Friday when struck by a vehicle on Townline Road in Vernon Hills, according to Vernon Hills police.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the victim as Adrian Marinez but declined to provide further details about the death and a Vernon Hills police spokesman did not immediately return a call.

A preliminary investigation found Marinez was crossing Townline Road northbound when he was struck by a vehicle in a westbound lane west of Milwaukee Avenue at 9:55 p.m., according to a police news release. Marinez was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and then flown to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead.

The vehicle that struck Marinez was driven by a 16-year-old male. Alcohol, drugs, or cellphone use were not suspected and the streets were dry at the time of the accident, police said. The driver was not injured and was not ticketed, police said.

Vernon Hills police were assisted by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team. The case remains under investigation.
