Baseball: Wilms' bat and arm help Leyden past Maine West

Senior Michael Wilms helped lead Leyden's baseball team to a 5-1 nonconference victory at Maine West with his bat and his arm.

The Eagles pitcher went the first five innings Tuesday, striking out six and allowing 3 hits to gain the win. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate and collected 3 RBI.

Kevins Nevarez went the final two innings for Leyden, striking out two and giving up only 1 hit.

Matt Orzanic (double), Josh Cubon, Nick Herrera and Johnny Auge also had hits for Leyden (3-0). Teammate Corey Lavilliais scored 2 runs.

Cory Scholler, Jeff Mustari, Matty Mustari and Max Rothweiler had the 4 hits for West, which received 4 strikeouts from starting pitcher Matt Willett.

Geneva 8, Conant 1: Josh Rose had 3 hits as visiting Geneva (3-1) won in nonconference play.

Ian Hansen had 2 RBI for the Vikings while Jack Olson (2 hits), Conor Cook, Cullen Geary and Sean Baumgartner all drove in runs. Niko DiLeo added a double and Sean Sinisko, the first of four Geneva pitchers, was credited with the win.

Tim Fauth and Colin Broeker had the hits for Conant (0-4).

Lake Park 1, Elk Grove 0: Winning pitcher Dan Defino threw a 2-hitter with 14 strikeouts and 1 walk as the visiting Lancers got the game's only run in the top of the fifth inning.

Xander Rojahn took the loss for Elk Grove, surrendering 1 run, 3 hits and striking out eight.

Austin Brown and Joe Lopez had the hits for EG (2-2).

St. Viator outslugged: Mountain Range defeated St. Viator 14-11 as Hunter Johnson, Jack Mahoney and Cole Kmet all homered for the Lions (2-1).

Huntley 9, Palatine 0: Brad Model, Joe Rizzo, Brad Maurer, Tyler Koss and Matt Rodriguez all drove in runs for Huntley (4-1) in this nonconference win. Nick Laxner went 5⅔ innings on the mound and allowed 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Jack Grochowski, Jack Hopper and TJ Skelnik had hits for Palatine (1-3).

Barrington 12, Madeira 1 (6 inn.): Tyler Trojan (3-for-5, 2 runs), Clark Elliott (2-for-3, 3 runs, double), Eric Kozlowski (2-for-4), Sean Davis (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and David Mitchell (2-for-3, 2 runs, RBI, double) led the Barrington offense.

Nick Bogaerts went the first four innings (4 hits, 2 strikeouts) and Brad Coble the final two (3 strikeouts, 2 hits) for the Broncos (4-2).

Bartlett 11, Schaumburg 1: Tyler Yang threw 4 innings allowing 2 hits with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks to lead Bartlett (2-2) to a nonconference win. Contributing offensively for the Hawks were Joey Allen (2 RBI), Eric Johansen (2B, 2 RBI), Alex Rodriguez (2B), Ryan Temesvary (RBI), Martin Moreno (RBI) and Yang (2 RBI).

Leyden 10, Fenton 3: Michael Wilms finished 2-for-3 and scored 3 runs to help the Eagles past the Bison in nonconference play Monday.

Leyden starter Justin Borges allowed 2 unearned runs with 6 strikeout in 4 innings to earn the victory. Brian Szopinski had 2 hits and Josh Cubon drove in 2 runs for Leyden (2-0).
