Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what is it?There are very few responsibilities greater than educating our youth. I am running for office in hopes to assist the district in keeping a strong focus on technology and the mental health of our students, while exercising fiscal responsibility. What do you think about the process for measuring student success in your district? Is it adequate? What changes, if any, do you propose?Data is a funny thing. It's fairly easy to collect, but then the question is always asked, what now? I think the district has done a great job with both sides of data analytics, and has effectively used MAP, ECRA, and PARCC to guide instruction. When you utilize data in the correct way, you will always find ways to improve, and that will be my continual focus moving forward as it applies to both the middle school redesign and social emotional learning. If you were on the board during the hiring of Superintendent Floyd Williams, did you fully support the hiring of Williams, despite past misconduct allegations leveled against him at his last job? If you were not on the board, what is your view of the board's decision?I was not part of the hiring of Superintendent Floyd Williams, but I fully support the Board's decision, and share the same vision for the district as Dr. Williams, which includes providing a safe, secure and healthy learning environment while correctly managing financial resources, and enhancing communications amongst the community. What budget issues will your district have to confront and what measures do you support to address them? If you believe cuts are necessary, what programs and expenses should be reduced or eliminated? On the income side, do you support any tax or fee increases?I currently do not support additional tax increases. An independent audit of the districts financials showed an 8% increase in net position from 2015, a 4% increase in revenue, all while still maintaining a AA+ long-term debt rating. Instead of burdening the families within our district, our goals could easily be meet by spending the money we currently have correctly. At this time cuts are not necessary, however this will have to continually be monitored, specifically with the integration of social emotional learning and the middle school redesign. What role can and should school choice play in your district? If Congress or the state approves a voucher system or other means giving students broader choices among public and private schools, how will that affect your district? What is the appropriate response for the board of education of a public school system?I think the appropriate response is always "what is best for our students"? The district has positioned themselves as a leader in education. If a voucher/other system is approved, the district would ideally be sought after by many improving our position. What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office?A full understanding of technology is still one of the passions that I hold onto. District 62 has made great strides in the procurement of computers/tablets/technology and made huge leaps in training, not only children, but faculty as well. I look forward to District 62 continually expanding the knowledge base for faculty allowing them to fully show what these devices are capable of. As we have all seen, technology is here to stay, and getting teachers comfortable with technology will no doubt create a more engaging and rewarding classroom. Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Neil DeGrasse Tyson. While he is an advanced astrophysicist, his ability to get people to simply understand the most complex ideas is amazing. What is the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?The difference between good and great. Always striving for greatness, even if unattainable, has allowed me to stray away from the dangers of complacency. If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?To have one more dinner with my grandfather. He was a good man and I miss him. What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?Math. While it may not be fun, it ties us together. It affords us the opportunity of rejecting bias, while systematically improving. If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?To ignore conformity. You can be different and still be kind. A lack of conformity allows you to bridge your life from good to great.
