Man involved in Bartlett standoff identified
The Bartlett man who shot and wounded his ex-wife before ending his own life during a standoff with police last Tuesday has been identified as 65-year-old Kazimierz Krakowiak.
The DuPage County Coroner's office determined Krakowiak's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the mouth, but the manner of death is still pending conclusion of the police investigation.
Krakowiak's ex-wife suffered non-life-threatening injuries from a gunshot she received before escaping the house on the 700 block of Gardenia Lane at about 11:20 a.m. Jan. 24. She is expected to make a full recovery, police said.
The preliminary investigation determined that the ex-wife had gone to the house to pick up personal items when Krakowiak shot her with a handgun, police said.
She reported her injury to a neighbor, sparking a massive police presence in the neighborhood as Bartlett officers were assisted by those from other departments through the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System, or NIPAS.
After hours spent trying unsuccessfully to communicate with Krakowiak, police received a search warrant to enter the home at 3:40 p.m.
They found Krakowiak already dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
Bartlett Deputy Police Chief Geoff Pretkelis said the investigation has not determined exactly when during the standoff Krakowiak shot himself.
DuPage County court records indicate Krakowiak and his former wife were divorced in 2011.
