Cubs World Series trophy coming to Gurnee
Gurnee will be a stop for the Cubs' World Series trophy Sunday, Jan. 22.
Village officials announced Monday the Commissioner's Trophy will be available for photo opportunities with fans at American Legion Post 771 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The post is at 749 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Because of expected demand, overflow parking will be available at nearby locations, including Primo Italian American Cuisine, just south at 720 N. Milwaukee Ave. There also will be parking to the east at Warren Township High School's freshman-sophomore campus at 500 O'Plaine Road.
Mayor Kristina Kovarik is among those anticipating the trophy's arrival.
"Having the trophy visit Gurnee is a great opportunity for the village, as well as for the American Legion Post 771," Kovarik said. "This event is the first visit of the trophy to Lake County, so we are anticipating a great showing of local Cubs fans."
Fans across the suburbs are getting a chance to be up close with the hardware. For example, about 1,000 fans had their pictures taken with the team's first World Series trophy when it was on display Jan. 9 at the Prairie Center for the Arts in Schaumburg.
Unlike the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup, a new Commissioner's Trophy is crafted annually by Major League Baseball and presented to the World Series winner.
