A 71-year-old Lake in the Hills man has been charged with sexually assaulting and abusing a girl he knew several times since August, including just this month at a Woodstock movie theater.

Edgar A. Arana, of the 100 block of Crystal Lake Road, faces felony charges of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child under 13 and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to police and McHenry County court records.

The allegations were initially reported to the Department of Children and Family Services; the Child Advocacy Center of McHenry County interviewed the girl before Woodstock police were contacted Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The victim, police said, told authorities that Arana had assaulted her "several" times, most recently while at the movie theater Dec. 17.

According to court records, Arana also has been charged with felonies stemming from incidents on Dec. 10 and Aug. 30.

Arana is next due in court on Tuesday. If he is convicted of the most severe charges, he faces up to 30 years in prison and would have to register as a sex offender for life.

He is being held on $250,000 bail, meaning he must post $25,000 to be released from jail while the charges are pending.
