A fire gutted a two-story Island Lake house early Thursday.

No one was hurt in the blaze on the 100 block of Fairfield Drive. Residents were home at the time and got out safely.

The fire was discovered about 3:15 a.m. Crews from the Wauconda Fire District and other departments had the blaze under control in about 40 minutes, but it continued to burn for several hours.

Firefighters from Lake Zurich, the Round Lake area, Grayslake and Long Grove were among those on the scene.

With temperatures well below freezing, Wauconda Unit District 118 sent two buses to the block to help keep people warm.

Investigators believe the fire started in the garage and spread. The exact cause hasn't been determined.

A loss estimate was not available.
