Dryer causes small fire in Hoffman Estates home

A clothes dryer caught fire late Thursday and caused about $2,000 worth of damage inside a Hoffman Estates house, fire officials there said.

Firefighters were called to the house on the 4100 block of Portage Lane just before 10 p.m.

Residents of the bi-level home at the end of a residential cul-de-sac on the village's far north side had self-evacuated, according to Hoffman Estates Fire Capt. Wayne Rothbauer.

Once inside, firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which was mainly contained to the dryer and utility closet on the home's lower level. Firefighters also removed the dryer from house.

Fire officials said the house did not suffer any structural damage. While Rothbauer said there was some smoke damage, the residents were allowed to return to their homes.

Investigators also determined the house was not equipped with smoke detectors or sprinklers.
