Rosary High School to perform 'Into the Woods' musical Nov. 3-6

Enjoy a modern twist on classic fairy tales as Rosary High School presents "Into the Woods" Nov. 3-6 at Rosary's McEnroe Auditorium, 901 N. Edgelawn Drive in Aurora.

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim bring favorite storybook characters together for this groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical about wishes, family, and the consequences of the choices we make.

This dark comedy is a lyrically rich retelling of classic Brothers Grimm fables. The story follows a baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella who wishes to attend the King's festival; and Jack who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever. Along the way, they meet Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, the wolf, a giant, a few princes, and more.

The musical team includes Megan Drahos, producer, vocal and pit director; director Laura Biancalana; and assistant director Ali Kordelewski.

The cast, crew, and pit orchestra includes about 75 students from Rosary High School and Marmion Academy in Aurora. Music is provided by members of the Rosary Symphony Orchestra, Rosary Chamber Orchestra, and the Marmion-Rosary Band, as well as several local musicians.

Show dates are 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3; 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4; 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6. Tickets are $10 or $8 for students and senior citizens.

Saturday evening features a preshow wine tasting with hot hors d'oeuvres, an opportunity for photos with the cast, and a dessert reception during intermission. A family picnic is planned for Sunday at noon. Preregistration is required. Both events are fundraisers sponsored by the Rosary Fine Arts Boosters.

Although "Into the Woods" features fairy tale characters, Act II contains scenes that may be disturbing for young viewers. Parents with younger children might wish to attend Sunday's family picnic and Act I (only) of "Into the Woods." Tickets are available online at www.rosaryhs.com/musical. Tickets may also be purchased by mail and in the Rosary school office. An order form can be found online. For information, call the school at (630) 896-0831.
