Fourth port for Indiana could be located near Lawrenceburg

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (AP) - A St. Louis-based commercial real estate firm has announced it has purchased Indiana Michigan Power's former coal plant in Lawrenceburg in southern Indiana and is working with the Ports of Indiana to see if it could be a viable fourth port for the state.

Commercial Development Company Inc. has announced it has purchased the 725-acre site. The company says it will take three to five years for environmental remediation and to tear down the existing structures. Indiana Michigan Power operated the plant from 1951 until it was retired last year.

Ports of Indiana CEO Rich Cooper said it too early to say what could be constructed in Lawrenceburg.

East Chicago, Gary and union officials had hoped another port would be located on Lake Michigan
