Candidate's experience for House is weak

Jillian Bernas, endorsed by the Daily Herald for the Illinois 56th House District, stated in the Oct. 14 Herald that as trustee of the Schaumburg Township District Library since spring of 2015 she's seen the impact that state government has on property taxes, including through regulations.

Since Ms. Bernas announced her candidacy for the Illinois House after serving only five months of a four-year term as a library trustee, it is understandable that she does not know that property taxes are local, not state, and that there are no state regulations which have any impact on libraries.

The total amount of money given to the STDL by the state is from a per capita grant, which is allocated to all public libraries, has decreased by a third over the past five years and amounts to only half of 1 percent of our total budget.

Ms. Bernas, just after taking her seat as a trustee, voted against the 2015-2016 library budget, stating she was opposed to the tax increase. There was no tax increase in that budget nor any budget of the Schaumburg Library in the past five years.

This is the experience and expertise that Ms. Bernas brings to her campaign.

For the record, I am a trustee of the Schaumburg Township District Library currently serving in my 40th year.
