DeLorean to make a comeback

Great Scott! The iconic gull-winged DeLorean may be coming back!

Last week, the DeLorean Motor Co. began accepting applications from those wanting to be placed on a reservation list to buy a new, re-created vehicle. The rides will look retro but pack modern tech. It's all possible because of laws passed last year.

The new legislation allows small companies, like DMC, to produce and sell reproductions of car models older than 25 years. The DeLorean DMC-12 was produced from 1981 to 1983.

Not much is known about what DMC has planned for its comeback vehicle, other than we may see it as early as next year. The company is still locking in such things as final price, chassis specs and the confirmed engine.

The reproduction won't have to meet existing crash-test standards but needs to pass federal emissions regulations. DMC expects to build one DeLorean per month for the first year. From there, they'll ramp up to one car per week by the end of the second year of production.

If everything goes according to plan, you'll be able to buy one and get it serviced at DMC's franchise location in Crystal Lake.
