Imprisoned Elgin man charged with child rape

A 35-year-old Elgin man in prison for a weapons offense has been charged with sexual assault and abuse of a child.

Cesar M. Calderon, formerly of the 500 block of Center Street, is charged with felony predatory criminal sexual assault and predatory criminal sexual abuse, according to Kane County court records.

He is accused of raping a girl younger than 13 from Jan. 1, 2014, through Dec. 31, 2014.

Calderon is serving a 4½-year prison term after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon following a Dec. 29, 2014, arrest after Elgin police were called to his home for a domestic battery case, records show.

Prosecutors said police searched the home and found a disassembled revolver hidden in a large prescription pill container. Police reassembled the weapon, which Calderon was prohibited from possessing because he was a felon and on parole from a 2010 drug offense in which he was sentenced to five years in prison.

Calderon was eligible to have both sentences cut in half for good behavior. He is scheduled to be released in late March 2017 on the weapons charge, records show.

He had previous convictions for battery and resisting arrest, prosecutors wrote in documents related to his 2014 weapons case.

If convicted on the sexual assault charges, Calderon faces up to 30 years in prison and lifetime registration as a sex offender.
