Boys soccer: Adiyiah's overtime strike lifts Mundelein past St. Viator

Mundelein's boys soccer team needed a well-executed strike from Kenny Adiyiah in the second overtime to edge upset-minded St. Viator 2-1 in the Class 3A Lake Forest regional semifinals on Wednesday night.

Sixth-seeded Mundelein (14-5-3) advances to play No. 3 Wheeling (17-2-2) in the regional final at 6 p.m. Saturday.

No. 11 St. Viator ended its season with a 9-11 record.

"It doesn't come easy," Mundelein coach Ernie Billittier said. "(St. Viator) is a well-coached program. I thought we had a tremendous amount of chances that we didn't put away, but we found a way to win and that's the most important thing. I'm glad we got a tough one like that before the championship."

Adiyiah scored the game-winner in the 91st minute. From 25 yards out, he banged in a shot under the crossbar off a service from Elliott Sachnoff for his 11th goal of the season.

"I had to get that (goal) since I had plenty of opportunities," Adiyiah said. "I just went up there and knew it was my goal."

Mundelein scored its first goal in the seventh minute, when Ethan Butler knocked in Jony Lucio's corner kick.

St. Viator tied the score at 1-1 in the 57th minute on a goal in front by Nicholas Guttuso.

"I thought (Mundelein) had the better skill and the speed, but I thought we stuck with them," St. Viator coach Mike Taylor said. "We stuck with our game plan. We gave up two chances. Mundelein was a good team."
