Girls basketball: DeMarigny eager to extend Kipp's legacy at Maine West

Kim DeMarigny is the all-time leading scorer at her high school in Kentucky.

This winter, she is taking over as coach for one of the all-time winningest programs in Illinois girls basketball.

The graduate of Christian County High School in Hopkinsville, Kent., has been named Maine West's girls basketball coach.

DeMarigny had been the assistant to Warriors hall of fame coach Derril Kipp, who died after a battle with pancreatic cancer this July after winning 788 games in 35 years at Maine West.

"Derril was a coaching legend and will never be replaced," said DeMarigny, who served as Kipp's assistant for the past six years. "He was also so much more than that to me. He was a mentor and more importantly a friend.

"I hope to continue the tradition that Derril worked so tirelessly to create, of making girls basketball a force to be reckoned with in the state of Illinois. I am honored to be the new head coach of Maine West."

DeMarigny was a three-year varsity starter at Christian County. She earned all-state status as a senior.

"When I was at Christian County, I always knew that I loved sports and could not imagine my life without being involved in sports in some aspect for my entire life," she said. "I knew I wanted to play in college but I really did not know that coaching would be my fulfillment."

DeMarigny, a math teacher at Maine South High School, majored in mathematics and minored in Spanish and secondary education at Union University in Jackson, Tenn.

She was a three-year starter for the basketball team and academic all-American while earning all-conference honors and being named team MVP.

DeMarigny has also coached volleyball, golf, soccer and softball. Prior to her time at Maine West, she coached at Diamond Hill Jarvis High School (Fort Worth, TX), North Gaston High School (Dallas, NC) and worked with multiple feeder programs in various capacities. She has also been a state certified basketball and softball official.

Men's golf

DePauw senior Ryan White (Elk Grove) tied for 11th with a 152 as the Tigers shot a second-round 305 and finished fourth at the Jim English Invite hosted by Centre College at the Danville Country Club In Danville, Ky.

White's final round of the season was a 77.

Women's soccer

Northern Kentucky University redshirt senior goalkeeper Brooke Schocker (Schaumburg) posted a save in the Norse's 4-0 victory over UIC at Flames field in the Horizon League.

Schocker shared time in goal with NKU's two other keepers as Northern Kentucky improved to 9-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The win moved NKU into a first-place tie with the University of Milwaukee.

Schocker's lone save vaulted her into second place all-time in NKU goalie history with 144 saves.

She improved her goals-against average to .61 in regular and Horizon League play which ranks second among league keepers. Her save percentage of .833 places her fourth.

The Norse have 3 games remaining in the season and in Schocker's career at NKU before their quest for an NCAA playoff berth with the Horizon League Tournament Championship.

Men's track

Lewis University senior Michael Leet (Prospect) was named runner of the week in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Lewis placed third (119 points) out of 14 teams in the Conference Crossover meet.

Leet placed fourth overall on the home course with an 8,000-meter time of 24 minutes, 44.74 seconds. He was 14 seconds out of the lead and was the top GLVC finisher in impressive regional field of 184 runners. It was Leet's first career GLVC runner of the week award.

Football

Augustana senior Frank Kalble (Hersey) had a game-high 10 tackles including 2½ for loss in the Vikings' 43-35 loss at Millikin.

Women's golf

North Central senior Paige Candra (Fremd) helped the Cardinals to a third-place team finish at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship, tying for 19th overall with a 54-hole score of 260.

During the fall season, Candra ranked fifth on the team in stroke average (90.33) and posted a season-best 18-hole score of 81 in the first round of the Elmhurst College Blue Jay Classic. She recorded one top-five finish and one-top ten finish in five tournaments.

Wheeling boys feeder

The Wheeling High School feeder basketball tryouts for boys are Sundays, Oct. 30 and Nov. 6 in the main gym at Wheeling High School. Fifth and sixth graders are from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and seventh and eighth graders are from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Attendance at both tryouts is recommended. Hersey boosters

The John Hersey High School Athletic Boosters are hosting their sixth Annual Booster Bash. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Durty Nellie's in Palatine.

Doors open at 8 p. m. and the event will include live entertainment from The Heartbeat and feature Exit 147.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Hersey High School athletic programs. Hersey Athletics involve approximately 700 student athletes in 27 different sports.

To date, the boosters have raised nearly $800,000 through various fundraising events like the Booster Bash.

All money raised go directly back into the athletic program to provide everything from record boards, to volleyball stanchions, to new hurdles for the track team. Tickets for the Booster Bash are only $20 and include entry to the event, two drinks and appetizers. Tickets can be purchased online at www.bidpal.net/herseyboosterbash.
