Chicago Bears' Callahan impressive despite injuries

Working through multiple nagging injuries, second-year cornerback Bryce Callahan has been one of the Bears' more impressive young players.

Callahan was the Bears' nickel cornerback in the first two games. He missed Game Three with a concussion but then came back to start at cornerback the past two games. He's been limited all week with a sore hamstring and is questionable for Sunday.

"He was playing well," defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. "He made some really nice tackles again (last week against the Colts). He had a bad penalty called on him. (It was) bad, not from his standpoint; the call was bad, on a third down, which led to a field goal. But he was playing well, both (Week Four) and this past game."

Callahan was called for a five-yard illegal contact penalty vs. the Colts, which led to Adam Vinatieri's 41-yard field goal. But he tied for third on the Bears with 6 tackles and had a pass breakup.

Cleaning it up:

Of the Bears' 10 penalties for 80 yards last week, 7 were committed by the offense inside the Colts' 40-yard line, part of the reason 522 yards of total offense translated to just 23 points.

"You can talk about scoring points in the red-area," offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said. "That's where that starts. To win in this league, you've got to find ways not to lose first. And that's been our emphasis this week. We're trying to clean up some of the discipline things for us."

Overall, the Bears have been penalized 35 times for 270 yards, but Sunday's opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars, is one of the league's most penalized teams, drawing 41 flags for 382 yards.

Don't worry about it:

How much time did Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio spend evaluating Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey leading up to the 2016 draft?

"None, me personally," Fangio said, but there was a good reason.

"Where we were picking (11th overall), they said he'd be long gone," Fangio said. "And they said, 'If he's there, we're picking him.' So they didn't need my input."

After the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Ramsey fifth, the Bears traded up two spots to take Leonard Floyd with the ninth pick.
