CLC Nursing Professor Carmella Mikol inducted into national nursing academy

Dr. Carmella Mikol, College of Lake County nursing professor, was selected recently for the tenth class of fellows inducted into the prestigious National League for Nursing Academy of Nursing Education. The induction ceremony took place Sept. 23 in Orlando, Fla.

"The college is very proud that Dr. Mikol was one of 18 distinguished nurse educators inducted into the NLN Academy of Nursing Education," said Maureen Robinson, dean of the Biological and Health Sciences division. "There are only 234 fellows in the academy. In Illinois, there are 10 academy fellows, seven affiliated with colleges/universities and three affiliated with community colleges. In Dr. Mikol's 35-year tenure as a full-time CLC nursing faculty member, she has been committed to curriculum development and advancing the quality of healthcare education," she said.

According to the NLN, fellows are evaluated on their contributions to innovative teaching and/or learning strategies, nursing education research, faculty development activities, academic leadership, promotion of public policy that advances nursing education and/or collaborative educational, practice or community partnerships.

Dr. Mikol has taught full time at CLC since 1980. Her most significant contributions in nursing education include the implementation of the NLN constituent league in Illinois and a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) commission project that resulted in global expansion of the CNE program. With NLN, Dr. Mikol has served as CNE chair of the test development committee; site visitor, team chair, evaluation review panel member and appeal board member; NLN Ambassador; mentor and preceptor to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students; writer for the NCSBN RN exam and CNE exam; and clinical trial consent reviewer for Western Institutional Review Board.

Dr. Mikol earned a B.S.N. from Loyola University Chicago, a M.N. from University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In addition, she completed the pediatric nurse practitioner program at the University of Wisconsin.

The NLN is the premiere organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education. It offers professional development, networking opportunities, testing services, nursing research grants and public policy initiatives to its 40,000 individual and 1,200 institutional members.
