Boys golf: Benet's Neenan, Feldman in good shape at state
BLOOMINGTON - Jack Neenan and Austin Feldman have one last day to play high school golf.
The Benet seniors are primed to make a run for all-state status after respective rounds of 75 and 76 Friday afternoon at the Class 3A boys tournament at the Den at Fox Creek.
"I played really well on the front," Neenan said of his outward-nine 35. "I was 2-under through 15 holes."
But Neenan lost all of his momentum when he suffered a quadruple-bogey 8 on his 16th hole.
Feldman, runner-up to Hinsdale Central senior Brendan O'Reilly Monday at the Oswego sectional, had a pair of lasting memories from his first round.
"I had back-to-back birdies twice," Feldman said.
O'Reilly had a 5-birdie barrage in a six-hole stretch to take the overnight lead with a 3-under 69.
Hinsdale Central, the four-time defending champion, owns a 7-shot cushion over New Trier after firing a collective 3-over 291.
At the Class 2A finals near Illinois State University in Normal, St. Francis junior Luke Armbrust is a shot off the four-way tie at the top after a first-day 74.
