Convicted Elburn cop's pension being reviewed

The Elburn police pension board has asked its lawyer to review its decision last year to grant a pension to an officer after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a child.

But nobody has specifically asked the board to rescind the pension of David Wright, according to board President Erich Schlachta. The board is just double-checking.

Wright, 55, was an Elburn police officer in April 2015 when he was arrested. He had worked for Elburn since 1991.

He was charged with predatory criminal sexual assault and sexual assault.

The victim, who Wright knew, testified in August that Wright began assaulting her in 2005, when she was 7 years old, and that the assaults continued for 10 years.

The first time it happened was at a birthday party. Wright took her in to a bathroom and assaulted, a prosecutor told the jury on the first day of the trial. The girl started testifying the next day, but Wright then halted the trial and pleaded guilty to criminal sexual assault. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison, and will have to serve at least 19.5 years before being eligible for parole.

He will also have to register as a sex offender, and was ordered to avoid contact with the victim for the next 28 years.

Under state pension law, a police officer's pension can be denied if he or she is convicted of a felony that is "relating to or arising out of or in connection with his or her service as a police officer."

Wright is receiving a $2,770 monthly pension. It is equivalent to 57.5 percent of his final base pay.

Wright's final salary was $64,663, according to a payroll database compiled by the Better Government Association.
