Friends, strangers helping with 9-year-old's funeral expenses

Financial support for the family of 9-year-old Katie Jonak has been pouring in since Sunday night's candlelight vigil to remember the girl killed in what authorities are calling a DUI case in Aurora.

A YouCaring crowdfunding website has been set up by the Westmont Junior High School PTO to assist with funeral costs. Katie's father, John Jonak, is principal of the school. The site's address is www.youcaring.com/john-and-tonia-jonak-family-666291.

Since the site was uploaded with a $3,000 goal, more than 300 supporters have pledged more than $17,000.

Page organizers did not immediately return a call seeking comment, but a message posted on the site Monday afternoon expressed the family's gratitude.

"We are overwhelmed with the support and love being sent to John, Tonia and the entire family. We know John is speechless with the support that our community, near and far, has shown," said the post signed by the PTO, junior high staff and Westmont Unit District 201. "Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We will continue to accept donations for the Jonak family through Oct. 16."

Checks made payable to Westmont Jr. High PTO also can be mailed to Westmont Jr. High Att: PTO at 944 North Oakwood Drive, Westmont, IL 60559.
