Markets Right Now: US stocks end lower

NEW YORK (AP) - The latest on developments in global financial markets (all times local):

Stocks closing broadly lower on Wall Street, more than erasing a gain from the day before.

Health care companies led the retreat for U.S. stocks Tuesday. Materials and technology companies also fell.

Alcoa slumped 11 percent after its results fell short of Wall Street's expectations, while genetics research company Illumina dropped 25 percent after announcing revenue that fell short of analysts' forecasts.

Apple rose after rival Samsung announced it was discontinuing its Galaxy Note 7 phone.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 200 points, or 1.1 percent, to 18,128.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 26 points, or 1.2 percent, to 2,136. The Nasdaq composite fell 81 points, or 1.5 percent, to 5,246.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.77 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 178 points, or 1 percent, to 18,150.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 22 points, or 1 percent, to 2,141. The Nasdaq composite fell 64 points, or 1.2 percent, to 5,264.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.75 percent.

Genetics research company Illumina dropped 24 percent after announcing third quarter revenue that was below what analysts were looking for.

Apple rose again after rival Samsung announced it was discontinuing its Galaxy Note 7 phone, which competed with Apple's iPhone. Apple rose 2 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 71 points, or 0.4 percent, to 18,258.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 8 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,154. The Nasdaq composite fell 15 points, or 0.3 percent, to 5,312.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.77 percent.
