Fremd guest speaker makes math aapproachable

A guest speaker at Fremd High School helped students connect math to music, cooking and several other aspects of daily life.

Fremd High School hosted guest speaker Dr. Eugenia Cheng, a senior lecturer of Pure Mathematics at the University of Sheffield in the UK, a visiting senior lecturer at the University of Chicago, and currently a scientist in residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, on Monday, Sept. 26.

Her current research is in Category Theory, and she has been featured as a TED Talk speaker and on The Late Show with Steven Colbert. Using music, juggling, and cooking, Dr. Cheng makes mathematics fun and intriguing for all.

Her presentation provided insight to students that they can have a career as a mathematician if they are interested in math without having a typical math careers like an actuary or engineer.

Growing up, Dr. Cheng's mother made mathematics fun, so her mission is to spread those ideas to as many people as possible. She said she loves math because it lets her be creative.

While at Fremd, she presented high-level mathematics, including some advanced abstract algebra usually only seen by math majors and graduate students.

It was not only Fremd math students in attendance, but students from other schools and classes attended. Fremd's Independent Study Foods and Culinary Arts classes were at the event.

Palatine High School teacher Melissa Meagher brought her AP Computer Science Principles classes. Additionally, Ernie Lane's Senior Math Topics classes and Alexis Mangiardi's Honors Algebra IIA/Trigonometry classes from Barrington High School attended.
