Nonprofit board member boot camp Oct. 15 in Crystal lake

Registration is open for a nonprofit board member workshop. Board members are invite to attend a Boot Camp developed to strengthen their role in the nonprofit. The training will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Volunteer Center McHenry County, 620 Dakota St., Crystal Lake.

The all-day training consists of four classes: board development, financial reporting, fundraising and program assessment, and legal and regulatory responsibilities. To register, visit volunteercentermchenrycounty.org. Individuals may attend all day or choose a morning or afternoon session. Lunch and a light continental breakfast are included.

Presented by experienced nonprofit leaders, each session will include a unique combination of case studies, lectures and peer learning opportunities to provide you with best practices and proven strategies for success.

Boot Camp includes

• Morning Session 1: Board Development with Marcy Peikos, Leadership Greater McHenry County. She will identify roles and responsibilities for board members as well as tools for recruiting and creating a strong board of directors.

• Morning Session 2: Understanding Financial Reporting with John Altman, CPA, Columbia College. If reading financial statements and reports is like a foreign language to you, attend this workshop to learn how to "make sense" of it. This session will include an overview of the most essential reports you should be preparing, how to read and interpret them, and how and when to get additional assistance and guidance

• Afternoon Session 1: Fundraising Assessment and Strategies with Lisa Ruby, partner at Ruby & Associates. This course is will teach you how to critically assess your particular event. Learn how to how to determine if the event met its goals. This session will also cover the process needed to discontinue an event and the key factors needed to manage that change.

• Afternoon Session 2: Legal and Regulatory Responsibilities of a Nonprofit with Shelly Casella - Dercole, CPA, partner at Eder, Casella & Company. This workshop will help you understand and "sort out" the legal and regulatory requirements of being a nonprofit. What regulatory requirements should you know. Find out what you need, where to file, how often you need to review and update your information, and where you can get help.

Volunteer Center McHenry County provides volunteer information and referral to any individual and group interested in helping the community.
