Crandall's Chicken Dinner Oct. 17 to support the Woodstock Community Ministry

There is still time to get tickets for a "Famous Chicken Dinner" from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Crandall's Restaurant, 10441 Route 47 in Hebron.

Long a McHenry County destination dining spot, Crandall's is usually closed on Mondays but is opening its doors to support the programs of the Woodstock Community Ministry.

They will offer an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring their broasted chicken or carryout for just $15 or $8 per child.

Patrons also can buy a meal for a veteran at the nearby New Horizons Transitional Living facility. Tickets can be purchased at Woodstock Community Ministry member churches before or after Sunday services or online at www.wacmgroup.org.

Walk-ins also will be welcome.

The mission of Woodstock Area Community Ministry is to generate leadership and resources to provide emergency assistance to homeless people within McHenry County, and to community members who are in financial crisis and reside within the boundaries of Woodstock Unit District 200.

Its programs include supervision of the Woodstock PADS rotating homeless shelter site and day time drop-in facility, as well as the direct assistance program which provides emergency cash and other forms of assistance to those in need who fall through the cracks of other programs.

Last year, the Woodstock Community Ministry provided $45,282.02 to help the needy in the community. It distributed $24,740 in food, $10,025 in clothing, $524 in utilities, $8,480 in gasoline, $1,444 in bus passes, and $427 in medical expenses. On average, the ministry helps 120 children and 111 adults each month.

October is Woodstock Community Ministry Month and the organization, which receives no government funds, relies on fundraising programs this time of the year to continue its work. A cookbook, "Recipes from the Heart: A Collection of WACM's Best Recipes," will be on sale for $14.95 each or three for $40 at Read Between the Lynes bookstore on the Woodstock Square.

The best cooks and bakers from a dozen area congregations have contributed over 260 recipes to the hardcover collection. Proceeds from the cookbook sales support the PADS site and drop-in center.

On Sunday, Oct. 23, the annual Woodstock Walk for Hunger steps off at 1 p.m. The 5K walk will wend through beautiful Emricson Park. There is no registration fee. Walkers can sign up and collect sponsors for their participation. All proceeds from the walk go directly to support people in need in our community. To register or donate visit www.wacmgroup.org.

"Hunger is a big problem in our community," Woodstock Community Ministry reports. "In Woodstock, 13.6 percent of our citizens are living below the poverty line. Nineteen percent of our families with children under age 5 are living below the poverty line and struggling to get food on their tables."
