Girls volleyball: Palatine takes title at Antioch

On Thursday, Palatine's girls volleyball team will visit Fremd to play for the Mid-Suburban West championship.

The Pirates tuned up by winning a championship on Saturday.

The went 5-0 to claim the title of the Antioch Invite with two-set win over Hampshire, Zion Benton and Deerfield and three-set decisions over Lakes (18-25, 26-24, 15-11) and Lake Forest (25-13, 23-25, 15-12).

Claire Chaplinsky (36 kills) led the attack for the Pirates (24-4) followed by Haley Holz (23 kills), Beverly Ryan (21), Corey Rinella (14) and Brooke Bauer (12).

Top blockers were Ryan (13), Holz (11), Rinella (7) and Sydney Christiansen (2), who set the attack with 102 assists.

Holz' 8 aces were tops for the Pirates followed by Katie Lindert (6), Chaplinsky (5), Alyssa Kronberg (4) and Christiansen (3).

Kronberg had 65 digs and Chaplinsky 25.

Schaumburg Invite: St. Viator (16-16) won the third-place match over the host Saxons 25-15, 25-18 and finished 3-2 in the invite.

Carrie Leazer served 23 aces and Kendall Claffey had 17 for the Lions while attack leaders were Catherine Hickey (37 kills), Claffey (19), Kate Nottoli (17) and Katie Kerrigan (16).

Nottoli was tops in blocks while setter Michaela Mueller was 231-of-234 for 80 assists.

Leazer led with 50 digs followed by Mueller (32) and Hickey (28).

The Saxons (13-14), who also went 3-2, were placed on attack by Julia Spitelli (22 kills, 9 blocks), Morgan Sterrett (18 kills, 19 digs and Mallory Gerber (17 kills, 17 digs). Jordyn Harberts handed out 56 assists and teammate Gabby Paelmo collected 56 digs with 49 passes.

Michaela Encarnacion added 5 kills. Tamaia Mallet and Dana Kiszkowski each had 3 blocks.

Glenbrook North Invite: Prospect (20-8) went 3-2 and took ninth place in the 16-team event as the Knights earned wins over Maine West (25-22, 12-25, 15-8), Wauconda (25-22, 25-12) and the host Spartans (25-15, 16-25, 33-31). Their losses were to New Trier 24-26, 25-21, 15-11) and York 23-25, 25-23, 15-10.

Aly Makuch and Meghan Meredith led the way with 4 aces apiece in the five matches while Kaela Myers (42 kills), Maggie Porwit (28), Meredith (18), Mary Mazurek (17) and Mandy Withey (16) led on attack.

Top blockers were Meredith (14), Withey (12) and Porwit (9) while Val Thomas had 147 digs followed by Myers (73) and Porwit (72).

Setter Paige Gerber handed out 99 assists and Thomas had 10.

Maine West (1-4 in the tourney) gained its win over Buffalo Grove (0-5).

In that match, BG (4-20) was led on attack by Kim Barton (8 kills), Kanella Kalyviaris (7), Lindsey Prommer (5), Sasha Rozhko (5) and Nadia Tarasova (4). Hannah Schuler handed out 28 assists.

The Warriors (13-14 overall) were paced in their five matches by Sophia Saldana (45 digs), Amanda Grzebien (19 kills, 35 digs, 6 aces), Ally Block (66 assists), Reilly Olson (31 kills, 24 digs) and Jessica Riedl (41 kills, 13 blocks, 5 aces, 21 digs).

College women: Harper (29-1), ranked No. 1 nationally, defeated Joliet (25-9, 25-9, 25-18) and Moraine Valley 25-16, 24-26, 25-14, 25-18) on Saturday.

Ellie Burzlaff (10 kills), Ariana Chelini (9), Katelyn Sommers (6) and Sarah Udoni (6) led the attack vs Joliet while Sommers set it with 24 assists.

Somers had 48 assists against Moraine Valley, with Kathryn Novy (season-high 17 kills), Burzlaff (9). Udoni (11), Chelini (7) and Mar Lugo (7) leading the attack.

Udoni also had 5 blocks while Kayla Mayer collected 31 digs.
