Prepare for the automation, robotics and mechatronics field in 10 months

Interested in training for a good-paying, hands-on career that combines mechanics, electronics and computer technologies? Find out how to become a mechatronics technician at information sessions being held at 6 p.m. on Oct. 19, Nov. 16 or Dec. 14 at the College of Lake County. Sessions will be held in Room D209 on the Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Sessions cover the mechatronics field, job outlook and CLC's certificate program.

In 10 months of full-time study, students can become highly sought-after and well-paid mechatronics technicians, qualified to install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair automated, "intelligent" machinery used in manufacturing.

Recent CLC mechatronics graduates have joined companies such as Abbott Laboratories, AbbVie, Amcor, Amazon, Honeywell, Precision Resources, Chicago Boiler and International Precision Components Corporation, according to LaMar Black, career programs coordinator. "These graduates are working in positions such as automation engineer, electro-mechanical technician, maintenance technician and mechanical drafter. We have been able to provide students with the skills necessary to be successful in today's job market," he said.

Earning the mechatronics certificate requires completing 30 credit hours. Courses begin Jan. 17 with introductory material, and students continue into the Spring Semester with courses in robotics, mechanical systems, control systems and electric motors. Students complete the remainder of the program in the 2017 Fall Semester.

The certificate prepares graduates for such positions as service technicians, electrical and electronics repairers; maintenance and repair workers; machinery maintenance workers; electronics engineering technicians; electro-mechanical technicians; robotics technicians; mechanical engineering technicians; and electrical and electronic equipment assemblers. Graduates are eligible to take exams for the Siemens Level 1 certification, the MSSC Certified Production Technician certification, Work Keys certification and the Solid Works Associate certification (depending upon the specific sequence of coursework).
