Tribune: Release Chicago street-gang trial exhibits

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Tribune has asked a U.S. judge to order the release of photos and other exhibits once they're entered into evidence at the racketeering trial of six purported Hobos street-gang leaders.

A Thursday filing by a Tribune attorney says the Supreme Court recognizes constitutional rights to access trial exhibits. Natalie Spears says they help media inform readers about such notable trials.

The three-week-old Hobos trial has offered an inside look at the kind of gang activity that's often blamed for persistent city violence.

Prosecutors displayed one photo during openings of two rival gang members dead in an SUV after an alleged Hobos drive-by shooting.

Defense attorneys indicated they oppose the prompt release of exhibits but haven't said why. Oral arguments on the Tribune's request are set for Monday.
