Paper chain at Lakeview stands for student commitment

Paper chains can be fun, festive decorations. At Lakeview Elementary School in Hoffman Estates, they also represent students' commitment to their school community.

This year the Lakeview team collaborated to incorporate even more lessons about social and emotional learning into the first weeks of school. The students have been engaged in activities that promote self-awareness, social awareness, and responsible decision-making.

On Sept. 7, Lakeview fifth- and sixth-graders led two assemblies - one for primary students and one for intermediate students - to review some of the important ideas behind PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support).

The students created videos and a slideshow and spoke to their classmates about what it means to have a growth mindset, as well as other important pillars of the PBIS program.

Each Lakeview student wrote a commitment on a slip of paper to be "respectful, responsible and safe," all of which were interlocked together to create a massive paper chain.

"This commitment chain is displayed in the hallway by the school gym, and will serve as a constant reminder of the promises that Lakeview students and staff are dedicated to upholding throughout the year," said Lakeview Assistant Principal Betty Weir.
