A Mundelein man shot to death early yesterday when gunfire erupted near the University of Illinois campus in Champaign was an innocent bystander, authorities say. George Korchev, 22, was one of five people to suffer gunshot wounds in separate, but possibly related, shootings stemming from an altercation at an off-campus party. Full story.

Five teens overdose on Xanax at Tower Lakes house party

Five teens were hospitalized over the weekend after overdosing on Xanax during a house party in Tower Lakes, Lake County authorities said. Lake County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home in the 200 block of Stonehenge Lake at about 12:17 a.m. on a report of a 16-year-old girl who was not conscious or breathing, authorities said. North Chicago woman killed when car strikes tree

A 24-year-old North Chicago woman was killed yesterday when her car veered off the road in Wadsworth and struck a tree, authorities said. Lake County Sheriff's police said the woman, whose identity was being withheld pending notification of family, was driving a 2004 Nissan Altima northbound on Green Bay Road at about 1:56 a.m. when the crash occurred. Bomb threats made against Long Grove schools

Authorities in Lake County are investigating bomb threats made over the weekend against pair of Long Grove schools, as well as surrounding police departments. Lake County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched about 2:19 a.m. Saturday to Country Meadows Elementary School and Woodlawn Middle School after a person called authorities stating he wanted to blow up both schools and police departments within a 50-mile radius, officials said. School district officials say law enforcement has determined that there is no ongoing threat to the schools. Full story.

Man stabbed during fight outside Ingleside bar

Lake County authorities are searching for a suspect who repeatedly stabbed a man over the weekend during an altercation outside an Ingleside bar. According to the Lake County Sheriff's office, the stabbing occurred about 1:20 a.m. Saturday when a verbal argument turned physical in a parking lot at 25526 W. Lake Shore Drive. Full story.

Golf legend Arnold Palmer dead at 87

Arnold Palmer, a Pennsylvania greenskeeper's son who became one of golf's most charismatic champions and made millions of dollars by turning his popular "everyman" image into one of the most lucrative sports brands in the world, died yesterday at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to his longtime assistant Doc Griffin. Palmer was hospitalized in preparation for heart surgery, but Griffin said he did not know the exact cause of death. He was 87. Full story.

The Chicago Bears' patched-together defense struggled to stop Cowboys rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott and, for the second straight week, was unable to put pressure on a rookie quarterback, this time fourth-round draft pick Dak Prescott. Starting pitcher Jon Lester worked 6⅔ innings of shutout baseball and lowered his ERA from 2.36 to 2.28 and upped his record to 19-4 as the Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 last night at Wrigley Field. Full story.

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident

Miami Marlins ace right-hander Jose Fernandez, 24, was one of three people killed in a boat crash off Miami Beach early yesterday. "All I can do is scream in disbelief," said Hall of Famer Tony Perez, a Marlins executive and native of Cuba. "Jose won the love of all. I feel as if I had lost a son." Full story.

Rodon strikes out 11 as White Sox delay Indians' title plans

The prize they've been chasing for months was right there in front of the Cleveland Indians. Carlos Rodon wouldn't let them touch it. Rodon struck out a career-high 11 over eight dominant innings and the Chicago White Sox denied Cleveland a chance to win the AL Central title with a 3-0 win yesterday. Full story.
