HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - Daniel Royer scored his first MLS goal in the 60th minute and the New York Red Bulls clinched a playoff berth for the seventh straight year with a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Impact on Saturday night.
Royer headed down Chris Duvall's cross, bouncing it into the right corner. The Austrian international joined New York (13-9-9) on Aug. 3.
Bradley Wright-Phillips' six-game scoring streak came to an end, but the Red Bulls took a share of the top spot in the Eastern Conference, tied at 48 points with Toronto FC and New York City FC.
Red Bulls captain Dax McCarty returned to the lineup for the first time since suffering a small tibial plateau fracture in New York's 2-2 draw at Chicago on July 31.
New York extended its club-record unbeaten streak to 13 games. Montreal (9-10-11) remained fifth in the East.
DYNAMO 3, TIMBERS 1
HOUSTON (AP) - Mauro Manotas converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute, added the go-ahead goal in the 73rd and completed his hat trick in the 85th to lift Houston past Portland.
Manotas made it 2-1 for the Dynamo (7-11-11) on a left-footed shot from the middle of the 18-yard box to finish Boniek Garcia's short cross. He capped the scoring when Cristian Maidana's pass from behind midfield freed Manotas for a one-on-one opportunity against Portland goalkeeper Jake Gleeson.
Manotas opened the scoring when he converted the first-half penalty. It was Houston's first attempt from the spot in 2016 - the last MLS team to be awarded a penalty kick this season.
Portland (11-12-8) pulled even in the 51st minute. Diego Valeri finished the rebound of Darren Mattocks' shot that bounced off the post.
UNITED 4, ORLANDO CITY 1
WASHINGTON (AP) - Patrick Mullins scored two goals and D.C. United beat Orlando City.
D.C. United (8-9-13) won for the first time since Aug. 27, while Orlando City (7-10-13) lost its third straight. The teams entered tied for seventh, two points behind New England for the final playoff spot. The Revolution play at Columbus on Sunday.
D.C. United led 1-0 at halftime and scored two goals in the first eight minutes of the second half for a 3-0 lead. Lloyd Sam headed home Taylor Kemp's cross in the 51st, and Mullins scored from a difficult angle two minutes later for his seventh goal of the season.
Mullins opened the scoring in the 34th after a five-pass buildup. Patrick Nyarko back-heeled a pass and Kemp one-touched it across goal for Mullins to tap in. Julian Buescher scored his first MLS goal in the 90th. Julio Baptista scored for Orlando in the 72nd.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY 2, EARTHQUAKES 1
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Kevin Ellis scored his first goal of the season in the 81st minute and Sporting Kansas City won for the first time in San Jose since Aug. 16, 2000.
Benny Feilhaber's corner slipped through a group of leaping players and connected with Ellis,, who deflected it in off his back heel. Kansas City (12-12-7) was 0-10-5 in Northern California since its last victory.
Simon Dawkins tied it for San Jose (7-9-13) in the 42nd minute. Henok Goitom chased down a loose ball near the 6-yard box and flicked it back to Dawkins for an easy finish.
Dom Dwyer opened the scoring for Sporting KC in the seventh minute, heading home Paulo Nagamura's diagonal cross into the far corner.
RAPIDS 3, WHITECAPS 3, TIE
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Ten-man Vancouver took advantage of Colorado's late own goal to tie the Rapids.
Whitecaps striker Erik Hurtado's header rebounded off the crossbar, deflected off Rapids defender Marc Burch and just over the line in the third minute of stoppage time.
Shkelzen Gashi scored twice for Colorado, making it 3-2 midway through the second half. Badji also scored for Colorado (12-5-12).
Pedro Morales and Kendall Waston also had goals for Vancouver (9-14-8). Watson was sent off with a red card for bringing down Badji on a breakaway in the 56th minute.
UNION 1, TORONTO FC 1, TIE
TORONTO (AP) - Justin Morrow scored in the 70th minute and Toronto FC tied Philadelphia.
Morrow made a run from his left back position, and midfielder Jonathan Osorio laid the ball off to Morrow for a tight-angle shot. Toronto (13-8-9) had its second straight home tie,
Alejandro Bedoya scored for Philadelphia (11-11-9) in the 25th minute. Bedoya took a pass from Fabian Herbers with his back to the Toronto goal, quickly spun past the Toronto back line and chipped a shot that looped over goalkeeper Clint Irwin.
FC DALLAS 0, REAL SALT LAKE 0, TIE
SANDY, Utah (AP) - Chris Seitz had four saves to help FC Dallas tie Real Salt Lake.
FC Dallas (15-8-8) has played two ties since beating New England on Sept. 13, and stretched its lead to five points over Colorado and the Los Angeles Galaxy atop the Western Conference.
Real Salt Lake (12-10-9) is 0-2-1 and has not scored in its last three games, yet remains in fourth place in the Western Conference. Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando had two saves.
