Oct. 20: Two award-winning slam poets to perform at CLC

A performance by nationally known slam poets Dan "Sully" Sullivan and Tim "Toaster" Henderson will be presented at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in Room C005 (C Wing Auditorium) at the College of Lake County, 19351 W. Washington St.

Sullivan and Henderson will perform their original work from 7-8:15 p.m. followed by a Q & A session with the audience. They also will lead a workshop from 3-4:15 p.m. Oct. 20 in Room T345. Both events are free and open to the public.

Sullivan, a Chicago resident, is the Mental Graffiti 2003, 2004 and 2005 Poetry Slam champion and recipient of the Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Poetry Award. He founded the Urban Sandbox, an all-ages poetry event in Chicago. Sullivan has appeared on "Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry" on HBO as well as on "WGN Morning News" and National Public Radio. He is currently an M.F.A. candidate at Indiana University.

Henderson is a poet, mural artist and musician who has appeared at events throughout North America, including "Lexus Verses and Flow," a multi-dimensional program that unites the spoken word along with rhythm and blues. He was featured on National Public Radio, the world's largest youth poetry slam, "Louder than a Bomb," and he represented Chicago in the National Poetry Slam. Henderson works in Chicago public schools as a teaching artist for the non-profit Young Chicago Authors. He also leads his own workshops in elementary schools, high schools and universities.

The event, which is free and open to the community, is sponsored by the CLC Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts division. For more information, contact Robin Kacel, associate English professor, at (847) 543-2561 or rkacel@clcillinois.edu.
