Indiana teen indicted on terrorism charge appears in court

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A suburban Indianapolis teenager accused of trying to join the Islamic State militant group made his initial court hearing on those charges.

Akram Musleh of Brownsburg was indicted Sept. 14 on one count of providing material support to a terrorist organization.

WTHR-TV reports Musleh smiled at his relatives as they entered an Indianapolis courtroom Friday shortly before a federal judge advised him of the charges.

A not guilty plea has been entered on his behalf.

Musleh remains in federal custody, awaiting his Nov. 14 trial. If convicted, he possibly faces a maximum 20-year prison sentence.

Musleh was 18 when he was arrested in June by FBI agents while trying to board a New York-bound bus. Prosecutors say he planned to travel to Morocco and then to Islamic State-controlled territory.
