Lake County jail union concerned about long work hours

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - Leaders of the union that represents Lake County's jail workers say that staff shortages and required overtime are creating unsafe conditions at the jail.

According to the Daily Herald (http://bit.ly/2dfQepd ), Teamsters Local 700 said Thursday in a printed news release that the situation is forcing some officers to work 16-hour shifts more than once a week. Union-local President Becky Strzechowski said "extreme fatigue" is leading to potentially dangerous situations.

Lake County Undersheriff Ray Rose said that the problems were created by officers not being available to work because of sick time and other reasons.

Rose said 14 people have been hired since April but 12 others have left through resignations, retirements and firings.

The union represents the jail's nearly 200 employees.
