Officials: McHenry kitchen fire causes $10,000 damage

A kitchen fire caused about $10,000 in damage to a McHenry home on Friday afternoon, officials said.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District was called about 3 p.m. to the 5000 block of Winding Creek and, upon arrival, found smoke coming from the front door, according to a news release.

An investigation revealed the fire had started on the stove when a resident heated wax in a pan, the release said. The resident was able to extinguish the fire but suffered burns to her left hand; she declined to be taken to a hospital, according to the news release.

The stove, microwave, and kitchen cabinets were damaged by the fire, and the rest of the home sustained smoke damage.
