Girls volleyball: Hersey hands Stevenson its second loss

Two days after claiming a milestone 900th career win, Hersey girls volleyball coach Nancy Lill watched her Huskies beat one of the winningest programs in Lake County.

The host Huskies (13-4) defeated Stevenson 25-18, 25-22 on Monday night in Arlington Heights as Zoe Strozewski (6 kills), Sammie Steger (6 kills), Mary Clare O'Shea (4 kills), Kati Kaburov (4 kills) and Amy Morgan (3 kills) led the Huskies' attack set by senior Maggie Reisel (22 assists).

Liz Solans (14 digs) and Morgan (8) paced the back row. Steger served 2 aces while Reisel and Kaburov each had 1.

It was only the second loss in 18 matches for the Patriots.

"Stevenson is an outstanding team," Lill said. " It was a great team effort tonight. Liz Solans was on fire defensively, frustrating Stevenson's hitters with her digs. Maggie (Reisel) did a great job setting our middles (Steger and Strozewski), who were nearly unstoppable."

Leyden d. Elk Grove: Sophomore outside hitter Destiny Corral (5 kills), junior right side Camryn McGee (5 kills), senior middle Jennifer Parker (6 kills) and senior setter Autumn McGee (6 kills, 2 aces) helped lead visiting Leyden to a 25-22, 25-18 win over Elk Grove.

The Grenadiers were led by Jenny Banak (12 digs, 4 aces), Isabel Michniak (4 kills) and Mary Cronin (6 assists).
