Sears to close 2 more stores, 64 Kmarts by December

Hoffman Estates-based Sears Holdings plans to close another 64 Kmart stores by mid-December and will start liquidation sales Thursday.

These 64 Kmart stores are in addition to the 68 announced in April, for a total of 132. Those expected to close in Illinois in this latest round are in Chicago, Tinley Park, New Lenox, Springfield and Macomb.

In addition, two Sears stores in Oklahoma and Pennsylvania also are slated to close about the same time.

A company spokesman said the stores are not profitable, but customers still have the option to shop online using the company website and mobile apps.

The number of workers per store was not provided, but most are hourly. Affected employees will receive severance packages and the opportunity to apply for open positions at other remaining Sears or Kmart stores, he said.
