Boys soccer: Lakes' late goals sink Grayslake North

Steve Gerrits scored late in the second half to break a scoreless tie, Brett Holmes added an insurance goal in the final seconds, and Lakes' boys soccer team blanked visiting Grayslake North 2-0 in its Northern Lake County Conference opener on Tuesday.

Danny Wieczorek and Wade Parmly each played a half in goal for Lakes, and each had 6 saves. Parmly stopped a penalty kick with eight minutes to go.

Lakes (3-5) got on the board off a direct kick from 25 yards out. Cam Beezley played the ball into Nick Dydo, who crossed the ball in front of goal, where Gerrits pushed the ball over the line from a few yards out with less than six minutes left. The Eagles' second goal came in the dying seconds of the game when a clearance ricocheted off the head of Holmes and landed in the back of the net.

"All in all, a very competitive game by two good teams that Lakes was fortunate to prevail," Eagles coach Kevin Kullby said.

Grayslake North fell to 4-5.

"While we had a fantastic first half, putting Lakes under consistent pressure, we did not manage to finish on any of the chances we created," Knights coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "The second half was much more open, as both teams went back and forth creating chances."

Grayslake Central 7, Grant 0: Randy Betancourth scored twice for the visiting Rams in their Northern Lake County opener.

Leo Orozco, Nick Walker, Austin Rockel, Jake Miller and Daniel Morrison also scored for Grayslake Central (6-3-1). Ethan Mendoza had a pair of assists. Morrison, Walker and Daniel Orozco also had assists. David Young (1 save) picked up his fourth shutout of the season.

Mundelein 2, Stevenson 1: Bryan Alba had a goal and an assist for the host Mustangs, who scored the winner in the final 90 seconds of the North Suburban match.

Jony Lucio also scored for Mundelein, which got an assist from Kenny Adiyiah as well. Mustangs keeper Eric Muniz made 5 saves.

Stevenson (4-2-1) got its goal from Steven O'Reilly on an assist from Ben Brandt to go ahead 1-0 in the first half.

Warren 6, Lake Forest 0: Goals by Kody Anderson and Ruben Delgadillo had the Blue Devils up 2-0 at halftime of the North Suburban game.

Warren (10-1-1) got second-half tallies from Hugo Flores, Richie Flores, Bryan Galvan and Carlos Mirillo. Thomas Macheras and Niko Jokic each contributed 2 assists. Noe Rodriguez also had an assist, while Jeffery Pioquinto earned the shutout in net.

Highland Park 3, Vernon Hills 2: The host Cougars erased a 2-0 halftime deficit but lost a tough one in last 20 seconds on an own goal.

Chris White tallied his 10th and 11th goals of the season for Vernon Hills. Highland Park was awarded 3 penalty kicks in the first half and converted two. Cougars backup goalie Nick Burrows made the save on the third PK.

Wauconda 3, Antioch 0: The Bulldogs led the Northern Lake County opener 1-0 at halftime.

Antioch fell to 5-5-1 overall.
