Girls volleyball: Stevenson wins its NSC opener

Jori Radtke and Sophie Sorenson pounded 12 and 9 kills, respectively, and Stevenson's girls volleyball team outlasted host Mundelein 25-23, 25-19 in its North Suburban Conference opener on Tuesday night.

Stevenson (15-1) received 3 kills apiece from Hope Havenhill and Sarah Woodstein, while Alex Cuc dished out 25 assists. Sorenson and Chloe Robinson each served 2 aces.

Mundelein (6-11, 1-1) was led by Sidney Brunkow with 5 kills and 3 aces. Taylor Heath also had 5 kills for the Mustangs.

Marian Central d. Carmel: The defending Class 3A state champs won 25-19, 25-18 in East Suburban Catholic action.

Carmel (8-4, 1-1) received 7 kills, 13 assists and 6 digs from Grace Butler. Lauren Nelson added 5 kills and 2 blocks for the Corsairs, Eileen Tarcha had 6 digs, and Erin Taylor pounded 5 kills.

Sydney Nemtuda and Brenna Koch each had 5 kills for Marian Central (13-0). McKayla Wuensch posted 17 assists and 3 blocks for the Hurricanes.

"Marian Central is a great all-around team," Carmel coach David Pazely said. "There were several starters returning from last year's state championship team and it showed that they have been playing together for a while. Scrappy on defense, efficient on offense and mentally tough. We made too many mistakes to keep up with them in Game 1. Game 2 was a different story, but we got stuck in one rotation and weren't able to catch up after digging too big of a hole."

Glenbrook North d. Vernon Hills: The Cougars lost their Central Suburban League North opener 25-14, 25-15 to fall to 2-9 overall.
