Rita Moreno to perform at CLC

Legendary performer Rita Moreno will kick off the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts 20th Anniversary Professional Touring Season at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at the College of Lake County campus in Grayslake.

"An Afternoon with Rita Moreno" will include some of her favorites from the American Songbook, Broadway classics (including selections from her films "West Side Story," "Sunset Boulevard" and "Master Class"), as well as songs from her first Spanish album, "Una Vez Más," produced by Emilio Estefan. Moreno will also recall the experiences, anecdotes and encounters collected over her storied lifetime.

"With her numerous awards and vast experiences in all of the performing arts, it is truly an honor to host this iconic actress, who is as committed to social concerns as she is to her art," said Gwethalyn J. Bronner, executive director of the James Lumber Center.

Moreno's credits span more than six decades, beginning with her Broadway debut at age 13. She has also starred in London's West End, appeared in more than 40 feature films and countless television shows, has performed in numerous regional theaters, most recently in her one-woman show, "Life Without Makeup," at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California.

Moreno has won all four of the most prestigious awards in show business, including the Oscar in 1962 for her performance as Latina spitfire Anita in the film version of "West Side Story," for which she also won the Golden Globe.

She won the Tony Award in 1975 for playing Googie Gomez in Broadway's "The Ritz." Moreno also won a Grammy for her 1975 performance on "The Electric Company Album," based on the children's TV series, along with two Emmys, the first for a 1977 appearance on "The Muppet Show" and the following year for "The Rockford Files."

She also appeared in "Singin' in the Rain," starring Gene Kelly, and was featured as Tuptim in the "The King and I" with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr.

Moreno's many awards include the Kennedy Center Honor Award in 2015, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2014, the National Medal of Arts in 2010 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004.
