Softball: Elk Grove's Thomsen will take her skills to St. Cloud State

When this column wrapped up last season, Elk grove's softball team was wrapping up a Cinderella run through the IHSA Class 4A state tournament.

With Hall of Fame coach Ken Grams at the controls, the Grenadiers advanced all the way to the Rosemont supersectional before falling to eventual state champion Oak Park-River Forest.

Playing a key role as the Elk Grove pitcher and key hitter during the magical state run was a junior by the name of Kylie Thomsen.

When she returns next spring for her senior season, she will be known as St. Cloud State University recruit Kylie Thomsen.

A five-year member of Jim Goranson's Illinois Bash program, Thomsen committed last month to the Division II program located in St. Cloud, Minn.

She was an all-area player for Grams last spring.

The Grens rode the arm of Thomsen (19-4, 203 strikeouts, 1.99 ERA) all the way to the Elite Eight in the Class 4A state tournament.

"Kylie developed into a top-flight high school pitcher this season," said Elk Grove coach Ken Grams after the season.

Thomsen batted fourth in Grams' batting order and was second on the team in RBI. She hit 9 home runs and batted .372 with a .413 on-base percentage.

"She is a very disciplined worker who has made great progress both in the physical and mental part of the process," Grams said. "Kylie has learned to battle through difficult moments on the mound - which was very impressive."

Northern Illinois senior Jenna Radtke (Stevenson), a resident of Buffalo Grove, earned the Huskies' second weekly honor of the season when she was named offensive player of the week in the Mid-American Conference's West Division.

She also tallied 0.50 service aces and 1.00 blocks per set and never hit below .400.

Radtke twice totaled 10-or-more kills in a match, hammering down 10 against Bradley and a season-high 16 versus South Dakota State. She was one kill shy of tying her career-high against the Jackrabbits.

In her final match of the weekend, Radtke registered 8 kills, 3 aces and 8 blocks while recording her best-hitting percentage of the weekend at .462.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Radtke was named to the NDSU Classic All-Tournament team.
