Volleyball: Radtke quickly swings into action at NIU

It's early in the season, but former Stevenson standout Jenna Radtke is in midseason form.

The Northern Illinois University senior from Buffalo Grove earned the women's volleyball team's second weekly honor of the season when she was named offensive player of the week in the Mid-American Conference's West Division.

Radtke registered 4.50 points per set in three matches at the NDSU Classic.

She hit .444 in attack, averaging 3.50 kills and also tallied 0.50 service aces and 1.00 blocks per set while never hitting below .400.

Radtke twice totaled 10-or-more kills in a match, hammering down 10 against Bradley and a season-high 16 versus South Dakota State. She was one kill shy of tying her career-high against the Jackrabbits.

In her final match, she filled the box score with 8s, 3 service aces and 8 blocks while recording her best-hitting percentage of the weekend at .462.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Radtke was named to the NDSU Classic All-Tournament team.

• Rhode Island senior Layne Self (Lake Zurich) finished with 10 kills and 6 blocks in a four-set loss to Notre Dame (25-17, 22-25, 26-24, 25-15).

It marks her third match this season with double-digit kills.

Notre Dame (7-2) claimed eight of the first 10 points in the third set before Rhode Island (4-5) powered back and eventually pulled ahead when a kill by Self gave the Rams (4-5) a 10-9 lead.

The teams continued to trade points until UND got two in a row to claim the set at 26-24.

Men's track

Davidson senior Will Brewster (Grayslake Central) claimed the individual win to help the Wildcats to a second-place result at the Spider Alumni Open hosted by Richmond University Saturday at Pole Green Park.

Brewster snapped the tape for the Wildcats, traversing the 5,000 meter course in 15:07.1 for the opening race victory. Brewster is the second consecutive Wildcat to win this race as Ryan Phillips won the ace a year ago.

Davidson tallied 43 points with four runners placing in the top-10 overall. William & Mary took the team win with 20 points.

"Today was a very solid opener for our team," said head coach Renny Waldron on the school's website. "The guys showed their fitness from a strong summer of training, putting them in a good position to improve as the season goes on.

"Will Brewster was impressive in victory, and our newcomers excelled in their first race in a Davidson uniform."

The site of the race, Pole Green Park, is the setting for the Atlantic 10 Championship later this season.

Women's soccer

Texas Christian senior forward Michelle Prokof (Gurnee, Ill.) posted her sixth career multi-goal game in the Frogs' 7-0 win against Texas Southern. The Frogs improved to 5-0-0 on the season. Prokof scored back-to-back in the 49th and 55th minutes.
