Girls volleyball: St. Viator climbs near .500 with invite title

St. Viator's girls volleyball team entered the weekend seven matches under .500.

But all it took was one tournament and the Lions are within striking distance of evening up their record.

Coach Charlie Curtin's Lions went 5-0 to claim top honors at the West Chicago Invite on Saturday, defeating Dundee-Crown 25-20, 21-25, 25-21 in the championship match.

All the other wins for the Lions (6-8) were in two sets over Dundee-Crown (pool play), Bartlett, Larkin and Elgin.

Carrie Leazer led the Lions (6-8) with 10 aces followed by Rina Rodgriguez (9) and Colleen Williams (8).

Top attackers for St. Viator were Kendall Claffey (27 kills) Catherine Hickey (18), Rodriguez (17) and Kate Nottoli (17).

Michaela Mueller set the attack collecting 98 assists while also registering 5 kills and 37 digs, second only to Leazer who had 47 digs. Claffey had 30 digs and Sarah Niesman 27.

Wheeling wins invite: Coach Jason Kopkowski's Wildcats improved to 12-7 by going 5-0 to win the six-team Round Lake Invite with two-set wins over the host Panthers, Streamwood, Niles North, Waukegan and Marengo.

Senior Timber Terrell put down 33 kills with 40 digs and 7 aces to help lead the Wildcats.

Other major contributors were Hala Fakhoury (28 digs, 6 aces), Jessica Janowski (72 assists), Kamila Staniszewski (21 kills, 7 aces, 17 digs), Jazmyn Veloso (28 digs), Amanda Prause 9 kills), Ellie Welter (9 kills), Melissa Claver (6 kills), Shannon Kennedy (5 aces, 21 digs) and Rochelle Laude (9 blocks).

Meadows second: For the second straight weekend, Rolling Meadows finished in the top four of a tourney.

The Mustangs took second place at the Lisle Invite where they went 4-1 and now stand at 10-5 for the season.

Aurora Christian was the only team to defeat Meadows (25-21, 25-21,).

The Mustangs defeated Wheaton Academy, McHenry, Evergreen Park and host Lisle for the winners as Natalie Anderson (8 aces), Madeline Rebsamen (5 aces) and Maddie Sellergren (5 aces) were serving leaders.

Katie Zanocco (9 blocks) led the attack with 27 kills followed by Sellergren (16), Anderson (12), Eleanor Errico (12), Kyra Amundson (12) and Rebsamen 9).

Natalie Klancnik handed out 46 assists while Mallory King distributed 32 assists and Macie Robinson led the back row with 17 digs followed by Rebsamen (16).

Leyden wins title: Leyden won its own invite by going 5-0 with wins over Conant, Westmont, Lane Tech, Willowbrook and Lake View, all in two sets.

Top contributes for the Eagles were senior outside Patrycja Streminska (25 kill), junior right side hitter Camryn McGee (10 kills, 7 aces), senior middle hitter Jennifer Parker (14 kills) and senior setter Autumn McGee (20 kills, 8 aces).

Conant (7-7) took second place by going 3-2.

Leyden topped the Conant 25-13, 25-20 with Ania Baker putting down 4 kills and Kristina Loznjakovic 3 for the Cougars. Loznjakovic also handed out 10 assists in the match.

Conant defeated Lake View 25-11 25-6 as Yuri Hara (3 kills), Baker (5 kills) and Michaela Vasalos (9 digs) led the way.

In a 25-8 25-9 win over Westmont, the Cougars were paced by Baker (9 kills), Loznjakovic (4 kills, 5 aces) and Vasalos (12 digs).

Loznjakovic (5 aces, 5 assists), Fiona Fennley (6 assists) and Baker (4 kills) helped spark a 25-16, 25-17 win over Lane Tech while Baker had 6 kills in a three set loss to Willowbrook, the tourney runner-up.
