Harvest history with the Schaumburg Park District

Fall for a day of taffy apples, cider and 1880s nostalgia during the Schaumburg Park District's Autumn Harvest Festival.

Sponsored by Davey Tree, the fest is set for noon-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 2, at Spring Valley's Merkle Cabin and the Volkening Heritgage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road. The fest features hands-on demonstrations of frontier-era farm life including cider pressing, blacksmithing and grain threshing. Other activities include children's crafts, 19th century games and live string music on two stages.

Grilled food, taffy apples, roasted ears of corn and cold beverages will be available for purchase.

"This is Spring Valley's largest and most popular event that celebrates local history with food, crafts, games, wagon rides, music and more," said Dave Brooks, manager of conservation services at Spring Valley. "The Autumn Harvest Festival is great for new visitors to get an introduction into the historical aspect of Spring Valley's events."

Cost is $5 per person and $20 per family. Children ages 3 and younger are free. Parking is available at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road and off Plum Grove Road across from the Heritage Farm.
