Girls volleyball: Hersey starts MSL East with win

Hersey's girls volleyball team began its quest for a 14th straight Mid-Suburban East crown by defeating Elk Grove 25-13, 25-9 on Thursday night at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

Freshman Kati Kaburov and senior Zoe Strozewski led the Huskies with 6 kills apiece while Amy Morgan chipped in 4. Sammi Steger, Mary Clare O'Shea and Maggie Reisel each added 2.

Reisel also handed out 17 assists while Emma Strozewski had 3.

Liz Solans led the back row for Hersey (6-3, 1-0) with 7 digs while Zoe Strozewski and Morgan each had 4 blocks and Steger 2.

EG (2-6, 0-1) was led on attack by Emma Slattery (3 kills), Isabel Michniak (3 kills) and Rachel Kandefer (2) while Lexi Chirbas had 5 assists and Mary Cronin (3).

Barrington d. Schaumburg: Led by Andi Capel (9 kills), Cecilia Stack (6 kills, 5 blocks), Gabby Morris (7 kills), Emily DeJesu (4 aces) and Chloe Layton (14 assists), visiting Barrington (3-7, 1-0) posted a 20-25, 27-25, 25-19 MSL West opening match win.

Schaumburg (3-4, 0-1) was led on attack by Morgan Sterrett (8 kills), Mallory Gerber (5) and Julia Spitelli (5).

Sterrett also served 3 aces while Jordyn Harberts handed out 16 assists. Gabby Paelmo collected 25 digs, followed by Sterrett (16), Gerber (13) and Michaela Encarnacion (8).

Fremd d. Conant: Senior Jenny Miller (9 kills), junior Jessica Mazur (5) and senior Kailyn Birk (3) led host Fremd (5-3, 1-0) in a 25-20, 25-23 MSL West win.

Mazur, a softball pitcher, also had 3 aces while senior setter Natalie Freund handed out 26 assists.

Freund also led the back row with 11 digs followed by Karolina Sas (10) and Bailey Hooker (7). Bryk, Mazur and Miller each had 2 blocks against the Cougars (4-5, 0-1).

Palatine d. Hoffman Estates: Visiting Palatine (6-2, 1-0) began defense of its MSL West title with a two-set win over the Hawks, who were led on attack by Monraia Wilson's 2 kills.

Ashley Poland had 21 digs for Hoffman (0-8, 0-1) while Natalie Pethes added 12.

Wheeling d. Buffalo Grove: Timber Terrell (12 kills), Kamila Staniszewski (7), Amanda Prause (5 kills) and Rochelle Laude (6) led the attack for host Wheeling (7-7, 1-0) in a 25-12, 19-25, 25-19 MSL East win.

Jessica Janowski had 13 assists for Wheeling while Nicole Langer (3), Sasha Rozhko (8 kills), Nadia Tarasova (6), Kanella Kalyviaris (4) were the top attackers for BG (2-9, 0-1) which received 19 assists from Hannah Schuler and 13 digs from Kiarra Akiyoshi.

Morton d. Leyden: Morton posted a 27-25, 23-25, 25-22 over the host Eagles who were led by Patrycja Streminska (8 kills), Natalie Payne (6) and Jennifer Parker (6).

St. Viator d. Vernon Hills: Carrie Leazer put down 7 kills for St. Viator in a 25-14, 25-17 triumph over visiting Vernon Hills.

Other top attackers for the Lions (2-8) were Catherine Hickey (4 kills), Kate Nottoli (5), Katie Kerrigan (2) and Rina Rodriguez (1), who also served 5 aces. Setter Colleen Williams handed out 16 assists.
