Girls golf: Rain postpones MSL showdown

First place in the Mid-Suburban League was on the line when the undefeated Barrington (7-0) and Buffalo Grove (4-0) girls golf teams teed off from hole No. 1 at Makray Memorial Golf Club on Wednesday in Barrington.

Unfortunately, none of the groups were able to tee off past the sixth hole.

The first group of Barrington senior Reena Sulkar, Barrington sophomore Nicole Ciskowski, Buffalo Grove junior Haeri Lee and Buffalo Grove junior Jasmine Yi were standing on the seventh tee when the course's lightning detector sounded, sending all the players to the clubhouse.

With no signs of the adverse weather letting up, the meet was postponed.

Ciskowski was coming off a birdie on the par 5, No. 6 hole where her eagle putt just slipped past the hole by a foot.

She also birdied hole No. 1 and was 1-over par for her six holes.

"It's a bummer but you can't stop Mother Nature," said Ciskowski, who set herself up for the eagle putt on No. 6 with a picture perfect 260-yard drive in the middle of the fairway. "We got what we could get in, and we'll have to come back and try again."

When the golfers return is to be determined.

Fillies coach Jodi Schoeck believes the rules state that all golfers would start their rounds over but she wasn't sure.

"We'll find out when we talk to the league coordinator," Schoeck said. "It's happened before but it's been a while and I am not sure of the rules."

Schoeck said she will talk to BG coach Matt Myers about a future date.

Myers, also the BG girls athletic director, was taking a class and not at Wednesday's meet. Assistant Chris Van Grondelle was in charge.

"Then we'll call Don (Habjan, Makray head pro) and ask if we can get another date," Schoeck said.

Schaumburg d. Palatine: Host Schaumburg won at the Schaumburg Golf Club 189-223 with the Saxons junior Trinity Corwin shooting a 39 for medalist honors. Completing Schaumburg's score card were Jennifer Cappello (48), Laura O'Connell (50) and Cheyenne Harris (52).

Jennifer Myslinski led Palatine with a 45.

Prospect d. Hoffman Estates: Prospect won the abbreviated meet (rain) at Highland Woods 135-210 as seven holes were counted.

Prospect senior Kate Ponzi shot a 30 for her first seven holes followed by teammates Emily Fleming (34), Margherite Pettenuzzo (35) and Alyssa Sharp (36).

Ponzi was able to complete her nine holes, finishing with a 37 for medalist honors.

Christina Wood shot 40 to lead Hoffman's score.
