What comes to mind when you hear the words "village of Third Lake?"

How about two lakes, lush forest preserves, maritime monikers and a Serbian monastery.

Nestled in between forest preserves off the Route 45 corridor in Lake County, Third Lake is a quiet residential community that was incorporated in 1959. Many of the village's homes in the Sunshine Subdivision were laid out in the late 1920s, according to the village's website.

The Mariner's Cove subdivision was developed in the mid-1980s and it surrounds the 88.3-acre Druce Lake, which is the smaller of the two lakes. Third Lake is about 155 acres, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Division of Fisheries.

While the village lacks a traditional suburban downtown that developed around a railroad or river, Third Lake is home to the headquarters of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of New Gracanica - Midwestern America and a replica of the Gracanica of Kosovo.

The 2010 U.S. census pegged the village's population at 1,182; it was expected to grow to 1,189 by 2015, according to the census bureau.
