Lake Park offense takes a bow in win vs. WW South
So often - and for good reason - you hear about Lake Park's stinging defense.
Friday night, the conversation turned to the offense.
Jackson Behles threw 3 fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Kobe Whirl as the Lancers rallied to a 28-20 DuPage Valley Conference football victory at Wheaton Warrenville South.
Lake Park (1-1, 1-1) trailed 20-7 after a pair of costly third-quarter turnovers. On three straight fourth-quarter possessions, however, the Lancers' offense staged a comeback on the ground and especially through the air.
"After I threw a pick 6 everyone was feeling down," Behles said. "We just showed a lot of heart and came back. It really does show the heart of the team. It shows we don't give up when times get hard."
Behles, who threw for 188 yards, found Whirl for scoring passes of 4, 5 and 30 yards. The first one came on third down and the last one, on a drive started by Solomon Sangobowale's interception, came on fourth-and-9 with 3:16 to play.
"We went in there and gave it everything we had," said Whirl, who had 7 catches for 76 yards. "This is a huge boost for our confidence. It gets everyone going."
Michigan State-bound defensive lineman Jacub Panasiuk, who had 2 sacks and a batted pass for Lake Park, started the scoring with a 2-yard second-quarter run out of the Wildcat formation. The first of Brian Haw's two field goals narrowed the Tigers' halftime deficit to 7-3 before Erik Stubner gave WW South (0-2, 0-2) a 10-7 third-quarter lead with a 57-yard interception return.
After a fumble recovery, Ryan Young, who ran for 89 yards, extended the Tigers' lead to 20-7 with a 36-yard run. Jack Maher started for injured Tigers quarterback Matt Dohse.
"We're a team that isn't playing consistent football for four quarters," said Tigers coach Ron Muhitch. "In the DVC you can't give up third- and fourth-down conversions like that. It's not good football."
Jake Carvahllo rushed for 90 yards and Jarkeyse Brackett added 53 yards for the Lancers, who piled up 341 total yards.
"They just knew we had to get some plays made," said Lancers coach Chris Roll. "I'm really proud of them. That was a character win for us, to come back and win against a quality team on the road."
